Dennis Mires, our architect, brought the final versions of Plans A and  B to show us site and floor plans, elevations, 3-D movies and hand renderings.

Changes were made to Plan A to reduce the size of the meeting room from 680 sf to about 410 sf so that it matched the size of the meeting room in Plan B.  This in turn materially changed the appearance of the main entrance and allowed for the addition of a covered walk way from the south side parking area to the main entrance.  The north porch and entrance were also changed so that the entrance door is centered on the porch and closer to the charge desk for better supervision.  In all the changes in Plan A also reduced the cost to about $1.3 million.

Changes made to Plan B included some rearranging of the janitor's space, book drop, mechanical area and IT area.  In addition, a peaked entrance and side porch were added to the front of the building. .  The peaked entrance was to break up the expanse of wall on the gable end of the main entrance.  Windows were added to the East and West sides at the level of the first floor and in the area above this to break up the wall space.  The costs continue to be estimated at $1.25 million.

The consensus of the group was that the changes to Plan A made for a materially more appealing design especially with the reduced size of the main entrance and the addition of the covered walk way.  On Plan B, most would like to see the peaked roof of the main entrance returned to the original Gambrel style but otherwise there were few comments.  There was some discussion of siting with Plan B having more flexibility in terms of actual site.  Plan A, given its angled north side and entrances is designed to fit along the approach driveway with adequate room from the driveway for snow plowing and landscaping.

Polling the committee as to which design they favored showed:

Joyce Allen – Plan A
Allen Brooks – Plan A
John Bruni – Plan A
Phil Davies – Plan A
Bea Davis – Plan A
Sam Harding – Strongly leaning toward Plan A
Bob Kent – Plan A
Sarah Kimball – Plan A
Meredith Piotrow – Plan B
Lisa White – Either Plan A or B would be fine

The design committee has finished its assignment and, considering the back and forth over the designs, arrived at a nearly unanimous selection for design.  Phil Davies and Allen Brooks thanked Dennis and the design committee for their service, perseverance and patience.
