Notes From the Principal:

Dear Jackson School Community,

The year is roaring to a close and with the arrival of warm weather comes the opportunity for students to play after school or be on site for school activities. I love to see our families enjoying the fields and playground while having the opportunity to connect with other parents. I do find that I need to ask for parents’ help in  keeping everyone safe while at play here on school grounds by calling attention to the school guidelines and potential safety concerns. Please help the children understand the following guidelines that I will review with them next Wednesday.

Children are not allowed to scale the granite wall next to the Whitney Center or climb up around the barrier intended to keep people off the retaining wall.
Children must stay out of the woods particularly on the brook side where there in an old dam, a cave and of course water.
At school events children should remain with their families or their class until  a parent is available to supervise them outside.
Children may hang from but not climb on top of monkey bars.
Bikes should be walked on school grounds.

Thank you all for helping us keep everyone safe while playing and enjoying this wonderful weather!

Gayle

Separate Notice:  Configuration News! Staff have been meeting to further discuss the configuration plan and have made some adjustment: Look for a letter to come home from Gayle soon describing these changes!  Thank you to parents who gave us some valuable feedback!

Annual JGS Art-Music-Phys Ed
Unified Arts Festival from
5:30-7:30

Come see your kids show off their incredible art work, sing, play instruments and dance!  The Spring Art's Festival is next Wednesday, May 19th.  The doors will open at 5:30 and close at 7:30.  Student art work will be on display throughout the Whitney Center.  Starting at 6:30 the band, chorus and entire school will perform their spring concert.  Immediately following the music portion, students in the 4,5,6 will perform a dance under the direction of Mrs. Porter.  Every student from the school is involved in this event.  This is a special occasion—please support the effort to have students dress appropriately.  Please check your baseball and softball schedules.  There are conflicts that evening—despite having consulted with Bartlett Rec since late winter.

On Wednesday morning of the art show I would love help hanging work at the WCC from 8:30am-12:00pm. You don't necessarily have to come for the whole time, but that will be the window when I need help.                    Carrie Scribner

JGS Classroom News…

Grades 2/3 are having a great year with Tin Mountain—and recently have been studying wetlands. Did you know that baby turtles go out into the middle of the wetland to hide from fox and other prey? Did you know that otters swim and hide in the plants to catch their food? But beavers do not do that. They eat the weeds.  Cat tail seeds blow off the cattails and spread out and they will grow into cattails. Did you know that beavers’ favorite food is speckled potted alder tree bark? The yellow-spotted salamander is four inches long. The wood duck uses the wetland for nesting. The pitcher plant attracts flies to eat by water, and the fly will sink into the plant, and the plant has a nice dinner.  AND NOW! FOR THE 2/3 CLASS QUIZ!

Where do wood ducks live?

A) swamp

B) vernal pool

C) marsh

D) bog

If you have answers, please tell Skyla or Belle!

The 6th Grade had the pleasure of visiting with local author, Lisa Gardner today.  She spoke to the students about the writing and publication process.  It was a great time for students to hear from this expert and make connections to their own writing.  She gave us tips and hints that we will implement in our mystery/thriller stories!  Many thanks to Ms. Gardner for her time and expertise!....4th graders will begin taking the NECAP Science test tomorrow. The test includes multiple choice questions and a hands-on experiment.  After students collect data as a team, they demonstrate their science skills like graphing and drawing conclusions. 5th graders will be working on storyboards to present their independent studies using Voice Thread…The K-1 continues to explore the world of birds and insects. They are looking forward to their upcoming  Tin Mountain field trip to Brownfield Bog—where they will surely see bugs up close and personal!
