This week at JGS...Yiassou (Yah-sue) This is hello in Greek. The 5/6 class are well on their way touring the world! Students have finished their first presentations on a country they studied and are gearing up for their next. Throughout our Caravans unit, we will learn about geography, currency, cultures, and more! If you have anything you would like to share of a foreign country, we would love to hear about it! Any pictures, slides, artifacts, or stories are welcomed in our class. Let us know when you can come in and help make the world come alive to us!...The 2-3 had a great writing time out in the woods on Wednesday. Quite a variety of pieces were produced from the descriptive, to the poetic, to the various genres of fiction. We had great times last week with
Lucy Gatchell, each working on our own poem books. These are beautiful, accordion book creations with full color crayon and watercolor complimenting the wonderful poems. We have been planning out a camping trip for next Thursday and Friday nights. The agenda looks to include lots of hiking, plenty of science, journal writing, skits and songs around the campfire, and yummy food! Cross your fingers for nice weather!..K/1 is having a great time being geologists this week. We went on a nature walk to collect rocks and found great ones to add to our science center. We also experimented with using different sized screens to separate a rock mixture into pebbles, gravel and sand. We are also communicating with Aidan's dad via e-mail and tracking his progress. He has been sending us lots of information about the journey and has given us wonderful answers to all of our questions…2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders enjoyed a wonderful visit from Emilie Riss last
week. She shared artifacts and photographs from Tanzania. On Friday, the 4th grade visited the Earle Farm. We learned from Lori Kinsey and Tom and Ruth Earle about how plants and animals rely on each other on the farm, and about adaptations of these organisms. We also learned about the experimenting they do to continually improve crops and sustain the land.
The entire school community thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of storytelling, music, and poetry on our first “Significant Elders” day on in late April, including a reading by Don Graves, who has inspired so many of us.. Multiple generations of Jackson neighbors, and grandparents from out of town came together to have lunch together, share schoolwork and classrooms, and to hear the wonderful storytelling of Tim Van Egmond. Thanks to local community members and businesses, as well as Mountain Top music, for making this special event possible.
The Jackson School is in serious need of a vacuum cleaner in good running order. Ours has finally given up. If a community member has one they would be willing to donate, please give the office a call at 383-6861. Thank you!
