Fire Department

The Jackson Fire Department is an all-volunteer department consisting of a paid part-time on-call chief, an assistant chief, a captain and three lieutenants, and 20 plus members. Approxi-mately half of the members have Firefighter one state certification. The department meets holds regular meetings twice a month, and has occasional special meetings. The members are paid $10 per hour for calls and for one hour per meeting.

The department has a part-time code enforcement officer, who is paid on an hourly basis to inspect commercial buildings and multifamily dwellings to ensure that they meet the current Life Safety Code requirements.

The fire department operates five vehicles – four owned by the town and one forestry vehicle owned by the state.
1.      A 1979 Howe pumper with a 250 gallon tank and a 1250 gpm pump, fully equipped.
2.      A 1989 Mac tanker truck with a 2000 gallon tank and a 1250 gpm pump, fully equipped.
3.      A 1996 Mac pumper with a 500 gallon tank and a 1500 gpm pump. This vehicle also serves as a rescue vehicle with full vehicle extrication and stabilization capabilities.
4.      A 1985 utility vehicle.
5.      A 1985  2½  ton military surplus vehicle used and equipped for forest fire purposes.

A vehicle replacement reserve fund has been established for the replacement of the 1979 engine in the near future. Vehicle replacement funds need to be continued, as the expected life span of the current equipment is 20 to 25 years.

The fire station has three bays plus a room on the second floor for meetings and training. The location presently used by both the fire department and the highway department is insufficient to meet the needs of both departments. A solution to the problem would be to move one of the departments to a different location, or to build an addition on to the present building.

The fire department is concerned with building heights since their 35-foot ladder is suitable only for a one-and-a-half to two-story building. The department is also concerned about the lack of adequate water supply outside of the village. A third concern is to maintain enough trained members to be able to respond adequately to calls, especially in the daytime.

Emergency Medical Services

The Bartlett-Jackson ambulance service started in 1981. The two-town service is different from other municipal services, such as the fire or police departments, in that it is set up to be self-sufficient in administration and finances, as per state statute. Operating expenses are covered by billing for each run.

The ambulance service operates from the Glen Station of the Bartlett Fire Department. This central location houses the ambulance, the office and is the site of training sessions. The ambulance service is led by two co-directors, and is administered by a committee of six, three each from the towns of Bartlett and Jackson. At least two from each town must be selectmen.

The ambulance staff has varied from a low of 14 members to a high of 25 members, with about 12 to 14 active members. Staff members are paid a stipend and per call. All staff members are trained to a minimum of the EMT-basic, and must receive at least 48 hours of continuing education each year.

There were approximately 100 ambulance calls in 1981 while in 2002 there were close to 500 calls.

The ambulance is replaced on a five-year cycle, with the most recent replacement made in 2002.
