This event is sanctioned by the Association International de Sculpture sure Neige et Glace and WinterFun, Inc. which is the only sanctioning organization for state, national and international snow sculpting competitions in the United States. New Hampshire is the most recent
addition to the list of states offering qualifying competitions for National and International events. The complete list incudes Alaska, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, Wisconsin and now New Hampshire! The winning team from the state event will go on to compete in the annual National competition. National winners are then eligible to compete in competitions offered by sanctioned member countries at the international level which include Switzerland, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, China, Norway and Russia.
The three day Winter Fest event brings breathtaking snow sculptures to the Jackson Town Park in the center of Jackson Village, a location with lots of visibility, free parking and close proximity to lodging and restaurants. Three-member teams made up of amateurs and professionals will begin sculpting columns of snow eight feet high and four feet in diameter. Team participants in the competition will come from organizations of art and culture including schools of art, colleges, universities, departments of architecture, culinary programs as well as civic organizations and must be residents of New Hampshire or work in the state. Sculptors from outside of the state will also be in Jackson participating in an exhibition of their work at locations throughout the town. Competitive sculpting will begin at 9:00am on Friday morning. Teams will work
until about 4:30pm on Friday and Saturday, taking only a short break for lunch. It is quite likely that many teams will work through the night on Saturday to complete their sculpture in time for judging on Sunday morning. Judging by people involved with past snow sculpting events and local artists will be based on creativity, technique and message. The public is invited to watch these works of art take shape and upon completion participate in choosing the “People’s Choice Award”. Check back for a listing of other events planned for this exciting weekend.
Jackson hosted a Snow Sculpture Exhibition in March 2001 as a solution to the problem of what to do with a near record season snowfall as spring was fast approaching. Professional teams of national and international competitors arrived to create sculptures at various locations throughout the town. Since this was a demonstration, not a competition, sculptors were free to create without any judging restrictions. Local residents and area visitors were overwhelmed by the process, intricate detail and and amazing results of these talented participants, including the Russian International Champion.
The first sanctioned New Hampshire Snow Sculpting Competition was held in Jackson in January of 2002.
